So I'm a fan of Doctor Who. I'm also a fan of BBC's Sherlock. Which means that naturally, I'm a fan of Wholock. What's Wholock you ask? It's when fandoms collide and imagine crossovers between the two shows.

Even More Baby Chicks and Science!

I went back to the Museum of Science and Industry today with some friends.

Foucault's Pendulum. 

We started in the storm science section.

Avalanche Simulation

Launching a hot air balloon.

Then we moved to the genetics area of the museum.

That black thing is a mouse.

Then it was time to see what we (somewhat) came for.

The back two were fighting. It was so cute.

The eggs in the other section, with some very newborn chicks in the back. Apparently there was a hatching chick, but I couldn't tell which egg it was.

There was an exhibit about people. There was a place where you could here what your voice would sound like as you aged. There was a section where you could play with sonar. And there was a section where you could select goals for your future.

I was amazed by both the number of things I wanted to do, and also by the number of things on the list I had done.

After that we came back to school and celebrated a successful navigation of the public transit system.

A Simpler Pet

Hello blog readers. Happy Valentines day. Did you get any chocolate or flowers today? I didn't, but that's okay. Tomorrow I will go to the pharmacy and get SO MUCH chocolate for the price of SO LITTLE chocolate. And as for flowers....

Give it time. They're growing.

Yes, that's right I'm growing my own flowers. We aren't allowed to have any pet animals in the dorm but they said nothing about a pet plant. A few weeks ago I saw this pot, with a soil pellet and seeds selling for $1.00 at Target, so I got it and planted it. They will some day be forget-me-nots.

I think I shall name them Lockhart. Or Gilderoy. Or Dory. Or Lenny. Or maybe I'll name each flower that sprouts individually with one of these names.

Anyway, although I got the flowers for myself I like the idea of giving either a potted plant, or seeds,dirt and a pot as a gift for Valentines instead of a dead flower. I feel like a growing plant symbolizes the spirit of the holiday so much better than a dead one. In fact, it could be fun to stay in and plant some flowers as a date.

Of course, flowers are lovely no matter what. Especially the ones my Dad got for my Mom. That I haven't seen but have been assured are lovely.

Holiday Music

Normally I would wait until tomorrow to post this, but I'll be traveling  home, so I'd rather just do this now and not have to worry about forgetting.

About a year ago I got the idea to put all the Christmas/Winter ect. music on my iPod into a playlist so that I could access it easily and put myself into the holiday spirit at this time of year. I never actually did it, but today the dining hall was playing Christmas music while I ate, so I decided to go ahead and do it. I found 16 songs that related to this season. If I find more I will add them to the playlist and this list, but for now this is my Christmas/Winter playlist:

Note: Songs can be played in any order, not just this one, though the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas are in the order in which they appear in the movie.

Another Note: I tried to find videos or streamed songs posted by the artists themselves. The only place where I couldn't do this were the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas. The Weird Al song might be pushing it as well. If for some reason any of the videos or songs are no longer available, let me know and I'll do my best to replace them.

I think the part of this list I find funniest is that I'm Jewish and don't have a single Hanukkah song on here. That and the fact that except for song 4 the most "normal" Christmas songs are by ALL CAPS.

Science and Baby Chicks.

This weekend was parents' weekend. I went with my parents to the museum of science and industry in Chicago. Can I just say how amazing this museum is? They did a demo with lots of fire. I got to push lots of buttons. We went into a coal mine.

The best part however was the baby chicks. In the genetics exhibit they have this hatchery of baby chicks. They are the cutest things, all fluffy and adorable. They also had a side with eggs that were hatching and two newly hatched not yet fluffy chicks.

These weren't the chicks we saw but you get the idea of how they looked.

Anyway, as adorable as the chicks were in general, seeing baby chicks at a science museum had a special significance to me. A few years ago when my sister was in school we went to the Boston museum of Science for parents' weekend and I got a sweatshirt that had pictures of baby chicks on them and said "Science Chick" (or something like that, I don't have the sweatshirt anymore and couldn't find a picture online).

It seems it is my destiny to associate science with baby chicks. To bad I'm not a biologist. Oh and before you go...
